" Increased angiotensin II type 1 receptor expression in temporal arteries from patients with giant cell arteritis. Access to the published version may require journal subscription. Corticosteroids are the only proven treatment for giant cell arteritis. This study shows upregulated angiotensin II type 1 receptors in both smooth muscle cells and inflammatory cells in the temporal arteries from patients with GCA. No authors have any financial/conflicting interests to disclose. 2 Purpose Currently, giant cell arteritis (GCA) is primarily treated with corticosteroids or immunomodulating agents, but there is interest in identifying other non-corticosteroid alternatives. Similarities exist in the injury pathways between GCA and atherosclerosis. Angiotensin II is a vasoactive peptide involved in vessel inflammation during atherosclerosis, and angiotensin II receptor inhibitors are effective in preventing atherosclerosis. The present study was performed to elucidate the role of angiotensin type 1 (AT 1) and type 2 (AT 2) receptors in GCA. Participants Ten patients with GCA and ten control patients, who were clinically suspected of having GCA but were diagnosed as not having GCA, were included. Methods Immunohistochemistry, using anti-AT 1 and anti-AT 2 antibodies, was performed on formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded temporal arteries. Main outcome measures AT 1 and AT 2 receptor immunostaining intensity was quantified. Results Hematoxylin-eosin-stained sections of temporal arteries from patients with GCA showed intimal hyperplasia, internal elastic lamina degeneration and band-shaped infiltrates of inflammatory cells, including lymphocytes, histocytes, and multinucleated giant cells. AT 1 3 receptor staining was primarily observed in the medial layer of the temporal arteries, and was …

متن کاملThe pivotal link between ACE2 deficiency and SARS-CoV-2 infection
Angiotensin converting enzyme-2 (ACE2) receptors mediate the entry into the cell of three strains of coronavirus: SARS-CoV, NL63 and SARS-CoV-2. ACE2 receptors are ubiquitous and widely expressed in the heart, vessels, gut, lung (particularly in type2 pneumocytes and macrophages), kidney, testisand brain. ACE2 is mostly bound to cell membranes and only scarcely present in the circulation in a s...
متن کاملThe effects of Mas receptor antagonist (A779) and renal perfusion pressure on serum nitrite concentration in male and female rats when angiotensin II receptors 1 & 2 were blocked
Introduction: Renin angiotensin system has an important role in blood pressure and renal functions. Active angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 converts angiotensin I into angiotensin-(1-7) which is a vasodilator hormone and interacts with nitric oxide changes as well as other angiotensin II receptors. In this study we evaluated the role of Mas receptor antagonist (A779) and renal perfusion press...
متن کاملAngiotensin type 2 receptor in resistance arteries of type 2 diabetic hypertensive patients.
The role of angiotensin type 2 receptor (AT(2)R) on vascular responses to angiotensin II in humans remains unclear. In this study we explored whether AT(2)R is expressed and functionally active on peripheral resistance arteries of hypertensive diabetic patients treated for 1 year with either the angiotensin receptor blocker valsartan or the beta-blocker atenolol. Twenty-six hypertensive type 2 ...
متن کاملCOVID-19: a hypothesis to prevent SARS-CoV-2 from entering respiratory cells
Coronaviruses (CoVs) are a group of viruses that induce infection in the respiratory and other systems in the human body. There are two coronaviruses that transmitted from animals to humans including severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) (1). The novel coronavirus that appeared at first in Wuhan, China, in December 2019 was named as severe acut...
